Wisdom Teeth Extraction FAQs
What are wisdom teeth?Wisdom teeth are the third molar in your mouth. Most adults have four of them as they are situated at the very back of each quadrant of your mouth (top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left). However, it is possible to have fewer, or none.
Wisdom teeth typically come through during late teens to early twenties.
How to care for wisdom teeth? It is important to look after your mouth following the removal of wisdom teeth as poor management may lead to dry socket. Explore our guide on caring for wisdom teeth for full details on how to look after your mouth post-surgery.
Why do wisdom teeth have to be removed?Wisdom teeth are typically removed if they are causing issues. Sometimes wisdom teeth get stuck if there is not enough space for them to come through. While this may not cause movement of other teeth, it can cause tooth decay if oral hygiene is not maintained. Wisdom teeth that have only partially come through the gum may also cause inflammation and infection in the surrounding gum tissue and this is the most common reason for extraction.
Can I have my wisdom teeth removed at the dentist? If the procedure is safe to do so, we can remove wisdom teeth in our practice. If your wisdom teeth require more anesthetic to help you or a more technical surgery, we may refer you to the hospital. If you are having issues with your wisdom teeth, contact us today and we can give you the best advice for you.
